Category talk:Government

From Governance Wiki

[edit] Top-level categories

I'm a little concerned that an anonymous contributor (possibly our Founder) removed Category:Government from the real top category (the Wikia standard) Category:Browse.

Sure, this wiki focuses on government, which is why the government category and article should list at the top of their groups on the top category and can be highlighted on numerous pages so as to send potential contributors to them. But not every page, let alone every article, is about government: much of the content is about how to contribute to the wiki and what external factors (eg the license and the host company's policies) must be considered by contributors. Even some that relate to government are not under category:government. Take for example Anupam's recent contribution of G7 Summit - Anupam may be planning to add some categories, but at present it is not under category:government.

You could have all the other categories under "Government", but that's stretching the concept of "category" past breaking point and would distract potential contributors who want to write about government.

I agree that Category:Browse should have Category:Government. While the former is the wikia root, the latter is the Giki root.
You are right, Category:Events should be a sub-category of Category:Performance. This has been fixed now.
I think we are at a stage where we should encourage contribution even if it is anonymous. Even if there are mistakes. As long as contibutors have a NPOV, can be polite and respectful and open to dialog they should be made welcome. Please let's leave a nice note for them when we notice them, encourage contribution and help them to correct errors.

Good! You can save time with the "Welcome" template. You can change it to reflect whatever emphasis you want. And you can make variations, using names such as template:welc2. A different one is better for anonymous users: template:welcIP. Robin Patterson 05:49, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
That sounds like a good idea- do use it to leave a message for new users! --Anupam 12:48, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
